Walmart Supercenter To Be Constructed Near Famous Battlefield
In Orange, VA, despite historians’ strong opposition, central Virginia officials gave approval to the construction of a Walmart supercenter to be built near the “Wilderness Battlefield,” where Ulysses Grant and Robert E. Lee battled 145 years ago, leaving more than 30,000 soldiers killed and injured.
The board of supervisors in Orange County did not see the plan as a threat to the historic area and voted 4-1 in favor of permitting Walmart to construct the store after approximately 100 speakers spoke in favor of the largest retailer in the world. Residents overwhelmingly supported the idea, saying it would bring in much-needed revenue and provide an inexpensive shopping solution to the many residents of the mostly farming community nearby.
Walmart said construction would probably start in a year’s time.
In Walmart’s defense, they wanted no part of blemishing the nearby historic battlefield, and stated the new store wouldn’t even by within sight of the historic landmark. Aside from that, hundreds of jobs would be created as well as tax revenue in the hundreds of thousands.
